On the occasion of the 61st Independence Day of the Maldives, Vice President Uz. Hussain Mohamed Latheef has extended his heartfelt greetings to the Maldivian people. In his message, the Vice President offered prayers for the continued preservation of the nation’s independence and sovereignty. The Maldives achieved full independence on July 26, 1965, following an agreement with the British government, ending a period as a British protectorate that began in 1887. Notably, even during the years under British protection, the Maldives maintained its internal autonomy, with the British government refraining from interference in the country’s domestic affairs.
