Former President Mohamed Nasheed has stated that the primary reason behind the Maldivian Democratic Party’s (MDP) defeat in the most recent presidential election was the waning popularity of former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih. Despite Nasheed’s assertions, Solih’s supporters maintain that the electoral loss was a direct consequence of Nasheed’s departure from the party and his subsequent formation of a new political movement.
While President Dr. Muizzu secured victory in both rounds of the election, Nasheed continues to voice strong criticism regarding Solih’s policies. Notwithstanding these criticisms, President Solih has hinted at his intention to contest the upcoming presidential election in 2028.
