Ensuring fair prices for Maldivian fish products has remained a consistent pledge of successive governments. As the United Kingdom stands as the second-largest market for the Maldivian fishing industry, it primarily imports processed, value-added fish products from the Maldives. However, following the Maldives’ graduation to a developing country status in 2011, the industry faced substantial challenges when a 24% tariff was imposed on fish exports to the UK starting in 2014.
Despite various administrations engaging in discussions over the past 12 years to eliminate this tariff, no tangible results were achieved until now. Furthermore, the previous administration’s decision to increase fish purchase prices placed an immense financial burden on the state, leading to difficulties in settling payments to fishermen.
However, as a result of the proactive and effective negotiations undertaken by the current administration with the United Kingdom, a decision has been reached to abolish the tariff on Maldivian fish products. Another significant milestone in advancing this industry was the official launch of the “From Maldives” brand during the President’s recent visit to the UK. This breakthrough ensures that after 12 years, Maldivian fish will once again receive a fair price in the international market, greatly benefiting the local fishing community.
