The White House has disclosed that the United States military maintains the full capability to strike and seize control of Iran’s Kharg Island—the nation’s primary oil export hub—should President Donald Trump issue such an order. This warning, targeting a facility responsible for 90 percent of Iran’s oil exports, comes amid President Trump’s prior assertions that any attempt to block the Strait of Hormuz would lead to strikes against the country’s oil infrastructure. Although Kharg Island sustained some impact from attacks over the past weekend, Iranian authorities maintain that oil export operations are continuing without interruption.
