Successful Trial of Empty Container Loading Operations Conducted at Thilafushi

In a strategic move to alleviate congestion at the Malé Commercial Harbor, Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) has successfully concluded its inaugural trial operation for loading empty containers at Thilafushi. During this 20-hour operation, 394 empty containers were efficiently loaded onto the vessel MSS Galena.

This initiative is expected to significantly reduce vessel turnaround times and provide much-needed relief to the primary port in Malé. The newly established depot in Thilafushi, which boasts a capacity of 3,000 containers, serves as an interim solution until the permanent international port becomes operational in 2027.

The government anticipates that the full relocation of port operations to Thilafushi will streamline cargo clearance processes, enhance operational efficiency, and ultimately lead to a reduction in the cost of imported goods.
