In the recently concluded local council by-elections, the People’s National Congress (PNC) secured a significant victory by gaining control of the AA. Thoddoo Council, a constituency traditionally considered a stronghold for the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP).
The PNC candidates successfully won the presidency of the council, two council member seats, and one seat reserved for women. Adam Naveen, representing the PNC, was elected as the Council President, defeating the MDP candidate by a substantial margin.
The MDP managed to secure only one out of the two seats reserved for women members. This outcome marks a major shift in the political landscape of Thoddoo, which has historically been a dominant base for the MDP.
