The government has decided to relocate the Malé Commercial Port to Thilafushi by November 11 of next year. President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has revealed that while 80 percent of the total operations will be moved to Thilafushi, arrangements will be made to continue the remaining services through the Malé Industrial Village and the T-Jetty area.
This project is a pivotal step in expanding the Maldivian economy. The new port in Thilafushi will be developed on a land area ten times larger than the current port and will feature a quay wall three times longer. As the new port will be equipped with modern digital infrastructure, it is expected to expedite cargo loading and unloading processes, ultimately contributing to a reduction in the price of goods. Furthermore, the plan includes allocating space for private businesses at both the Industrial Village and Thilafushi, alongside the introduction of Ro-Ro (Roll-on/Roll-off) ferry services.
