In a historic shift for ADh. Maamigili’s political landscape, the Jumhooree Party (JP) has lost its dominant majority for the first time, as the ruling People’s National Congress (PNC) secured a significant victory. In the local council elections held last Saturday, the PNC claimed two out of the five seats on the Maamigili Council. Furthermore, the party successfully secured the presidency and two additional seats on the Women’s Development Committee (WDC).
Maamigili has traditionally been a stronghold under the complete political influence of Qasim Ibrahim. Therefore, the PNC’s success in securing multiple seats marks a transformative moment in the island’s political history. Although the JP candidate managed to retain the Council Presidency, the PNC candidate was defeated by a very narrow margin. This outcome, marking the first time the Jumhooree Party has lost its majority in Maamigili, is widely viewed as a decisive message from the island’s youth regarding the evolving political climate.
