In the local council and Women’s Development Committee (WDC) by-elections held last Saturday, the ruling People’s National Congress (PNC) secured a significant majority of seats across the Dhangethi constituency. According to the provisional results released by the Elections Commission, the PNC won 20 seats from the five islands within the constituency, while the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) secured 7 seats.

Looking at the individual island results, the PNC achieved a complete sweep in Dhidhdhoo and also secured the majority of seats in Omadhoo. In Dhangethi, while an independent candidate won the seat for Council President, the remaining seats were secured by the PNC. In Mandhoo, the PNC candidate was elected as Council President unopposed, though the MDP managed to win several other seats on the island. The MDP’s most significant success within the constituency was in Dhigurah, where the party successfully won all available seats.
