Economic Minister Mohamed Saeed has issued a robust rebuttal to the opposition MDP’s criticisms regarding the Maldives’ economic situation and the prevailing dollar shortage. The Minister highlighted that, compared to the previous MDP administration, the volume of foreign currency disbursed through banks at official rates has increased significantly. He presented statistics demonstrating a substantial rise in the allocation of dollars for bank cards, import businesses, students studying abroad, and individuals seeking medical treatment overseas.
Minister Saeed further alleged that the opposition is intentionally inciting market instability and encouraging the black market for political gain. He reminded the public of the detrimental economic impacts caused by the Nasheed administration’s flawed policies and the excessive printing of currency during that period. The Minister emphasized that the current administration is diligently working to settle previous debts, reclaim mortgaged state assets, and implement major projects to bolster the economy. Consequently, he urged all parties to refrain from spreading misinformation that could potentially destabilize the nation’s economy.
