The Maldives and Australia have held high-level discussions focused on human resource development within the defense sector and enhancing maritime security. These deliberations took place during a courtesy call paid by the Australian High Commissioner to the Maldives, His Excellency David Jessup, on the Minister of Defence and National Security, Honorable Hassan Rashid.

During the meeting, both parties engaged in comprehensive dialogue regarding various issues of mutual interest in the field of defense. According to the Ministry of Defence, the discussions primarily centered on maritime domain awareness and protection, human resource capacity building, and the maintenance of regional stability.

Minister of Defence Hassan Rashid expressed his sincere appreciation for Australia’s continued support and assistance in strengthening the Maldives’ defense capabilities. The Minister further emphasized that bolstering bilateral relations is crucial for effectively addressing shared security challenges and interests.

Australia remains a key partner providing significant assistance to the Maldives, particularly in the defense sector. A notable recent contribution is the donation of a “Guardian-class” patrol boat by the Australian government to the Maldives National Defence Force. The Maldivian government has highlighted that the acquisition of this vessel is a strategic step in their ongoing efforts to ensure regional safety and security.
