The Chief Spokesperson of the Government, Mohamed Hussain Shareef, has clarified that the recent adjustments made to the foreign transaction policies for Bank of Maldives (BML) Rufiyaa cards were made independently by the bank and are not linked to the government. He emphasized that these measures were implemented by the bank to prioritize foreign exchange for essential needs and to curb the misuse of card facilities for unauthorized or improper transactions.

Furthermore, the spokesperson dismissed allegations suggesting that the policy change was a result of government cash flow constraints arising from sovereign debt repayments. The government reaffirmed its stability in meeting debt obligations without difficulty, asserting that the bank’s decision aims to safeguard and ensure the availability of foreign currency for the fundamental requirements of the Maldivian people.
