The Minister of Homeland Security and Technology, Ali Ihusaan, has dismissed rumors claiming that the woman who passed away at the Maldives National University (MNU) hostel had placed a phone call to the police prior to the incident.

Clarifying the sequence of events, the Minister stated that while there were several text message exchanges between the individual and the Police Victim Support unit throughout that evening, no voice call was made. He noted that immediately after she sent a final message stating “I’m gone” and subsequently went offline, police officers were dispatched to the scene to locate her.

Minister Ihusaan urged the public to refrain from disseminating unverified information regarding sensitive cases involving mental health. He further confirmed that, in addition to an internal review of the police response, independent oversight institutions will also be investigating the matter to ensure accountability.
