63 Tons of Seaweed Exported Monthly

The government is prioritizing the development of mariculture as a distinct industry within the Maldives. To facilitate this, five specific zones have been designated for mariculture projects, including regions in Boduthiladhunmathi, Raa Atoll, Meemu Atoll, Thaa Atoll, and a lagoon near Maniyafushi.

Currently, seaweed farming is being successfully carried out in B. Fehendhoo, with an impressive monthly export volume of 63 tons to international markets. Similar investments are also underway in Gaafu Alifu Atoll. The government aims to expand these operations nationwide, with the long-term goal of transforming mariculture into an industry that rivals the revenue generated by skipjack tuna fishing.

To support newcomers and those looking to scale their businesses in this sector, a specialized financial assistance program titled the “Mariculture Scheme” has been introduced.
