The Independence Day of the Maldives is a significant occasion from which every citizen should draw inspiration and lessons. The Maldives was compelled to seek British protection primarily due to internal political strife and a declining economy. In particular, the dominance of foreign Borah traders over the nation’s commerce, coupled with the inability to adapt the local economy to global shifts, led to the signing of the Protectorate Agreement with the British in 1887.
Although the British exerted influence over the domestic affairs of the Maldives under this agreement, the nation achieved full independence on July 26, 1965, through the courageous efforts of national leaders and the people. The pivotal role played by Prime Minister Ibrahim Nasir, especially his decisive measures to expel the Borah traders and secure sovereignty, remains a cornerstone of our history. This narrative teaches us that maintaining national independence is the responsibility of every Maldivian, and we must remain vigilant against allowing foreign interference in our internal affairs.
