Every year, the 3rd of May is observed globally as World Press Freedom Day. Established by the United Nations in 1993, this day underscores the vital significance of journalism, widely recognized as the “fourth pillar” of the state. Given that journalists possess the power to influence governance and shape public opinion, it is imperative that this authority is exercised with the highest degree of responsibility. In today’s technologically advanced world, the public continues to place its greatest trust in the information disseminated by the press. Consequently, it is a fundamental duty of journalists to ensure the accuracy of their reporting while steadfastly avoiding the spread of misinformation and the incitement of hatred. The Constitution of the Maldives provides comprehensive protection for press freedom, acknowledging the indispensable role journalists play within a democracy.
As an Islamic nation, we must ensure that the exercise of press freedom remains within the framework of Islamic principles and social norms. Presently, in the Maldives, journalists are guaranteed the full freedom to report on diverse issues and to provide constructive criticism of the government.
