“The Maldives is a Vital Economic Partner for Sri Lanka”

Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake has characterized the Maldives as a crucial economic ally, emphasizing the importance of further strengthening the long-standing bilateral relations between the two nations. Speaking at a press conference held during the state visit of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu to Sri Lanka, President Dissanayake highlighted that the Maldives currently stands as the third-largest export market for Sri Lanka, underscoring the necessity of expanding trade ties. He also expressed his gratitude to the Maldives for the assistance provided during the recent flooding in Sri Lanka.

During this visit, the two countries signed seven Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) aimed at enhancing cooperation in key areas, including climate change mitigation, shipbuilding, and tourism. Furthermore, both leaders agreed to work closely to maintain the safety and security of the Indian Ocean and to combat illegal maritime activities. President Dissanayake also noted that the final stages of allocating land for the operation of respective high commissions in both countries are currently underway.
