A 35-year-old man has been arrested and remanded in custody for 15 days following an assault on the Mayor of Malé, Adam Azim, during an MDP gathering. In his court appearance, the suspect denied the allegations of assault, claiming that he approached the Mayor solely to engage in conversation and that it was the participants of the gathering who had attacked him.
President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has strongly condemned the incident. Furthermore, the President’s Office has issued an assurance that the government had no involvement in the matter. Although no formal complaint was lodged regarding the incident, the Maldives Police Service initiated an investigation on their own initiative after footage of the event surfaced online.
