Minister Mohamed Ameen has stated that the reduction in jet fuel prices has led to a notable increase in the number of airlines operating to the Maldives. The Minister highlighted that lowering the price of jet fuel from $1.09 to $0.96 per liter was a pivotal step in attracting international carriers. While flight cancellations had previously risen to 99 due to the conflict in the Middle East, proactive government interventions have successfully reduced this figure to 70.
Furthermore, major Gulf carriers have resumed their operations, contributing to a two percent increase in passenger volume compared to the previous year. Although the overall rate of tourist arrivals remains lower than last year’s figures, there has been a significant 17 percent growth over the recent months. The Minister also emphasized that the commencement of direct flights to Australia by the national airline marks a major advancement for the country’s tourism industry.
