Minister of Fisheries and Ocean Resources, Ahmed Shiyam, has announced that more than MVR 1.1 billion has been disbursed to fishermen as of the end of June this year. This initiative aligns with President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s presidential pledge to ensure that fishermen receive payment for their catch within a 48-hour timeframe.
The Minister highlighted that the current administration successfully cleared a backlog of MVR 250 million in outstanding payments that was pending when they took office. He further noted that since last December, the government has maintained a consistent and regular schedule for issuing payments to the fishing community. The administration’s overarching goal is to further develop the fisheries industry and facilitate more efficient and supportive mechanisms for all fishermen.
