The Minister of Fisheries and Ocean Resources, Ahmed Shiyam, has stated that the Maldives will be the primary beneficiary of the United Kingdom’s decision to eliminate tariffs on imported fish products. Under this new arrangement, the 20% tariff previously levied on Maldivian fish exports to the UK has been waived until the end of 2028.

The Minister highlighted that this significant development is a direct outcome of the high-level discussions held by the President during his official visit to the United Kingdom. As the UK stands as the second-largest market for Maldivian fish exports, local exporters previously faced the challenge of competing with nations that already enjoyed tariff-free access.

With this change, Maldivian fishermen and exporters will experience substantial relief, enabling them to compete more effectively in the international market. The government aims to continue further negotiations with the UK authorities to ensure these concessions become permanent.
