The government is currently undertaking significant projects to ensure that 80% of the fish caught in the Maldives can be processed and canned locally. As a substantial portion of the current catch is exported as frozen raw fish, these initiatives aim to maximize economic value. In addition to expanding the capacity of the Felivaru fisheries complex, new processing factories are being developed in F. Nilandhoo and Gdh. Fiyoari. Upon completion, these facilities will provide a daily processing capacity of 300 tonnes, leading to a substantial increase in national revenue from the fisheries sector. The government aims to have all these facilities fully operational by 2028.
