In a social media post shared on the occasion of World Tuberculosis Day, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu expressed pride in the Maldives’ status as a country with a low prevalence of tuberculosis. He noted that while TB is a preventable and curable disease, millions of people around the world continue to face the threat it poses.

The President emphasised that a robust healthcare system and strong community participation are essential to eliminating the disease. He highlighted the significant efforts the Maldives has undertaken to strengthen disease detection systems and to expand access to testing and treatment services.

President Muizzu called on healthcare professionals and communities to intensify their collaborative efforts in working towards a future free from tuberculosis.

World Tuberculosis Day is observed annually on 24 March to raise awareness about the disease and its impact. In the Maldives, directly observed treatment for TB — in line with international standards — has been in place since 1994.
