
Minister of Economic Development and Trade, Mohamed Saeed, has stated that while concerns remain regarding potential disruptions to the Maldives’ food supply chain as a result of the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, the government is actively taking comprehensive measures to ensure the uninterrupted supply of food and essential commodities to the country. In this regard, he noted that efforts are underway to expand trade ties with markets that have not previously been utilised. In particular, he highlighted that imports are being increasingly sourced from countries such as Indonesia, Oman, Thailand, Malaysia, Cambodia, and China. He further noted that a formal trade agreement has been signed with Thailand.

In addition, the Minister indicated that the government is exploring opportunities to build trade relationships with select African nations, and that coordinated efforts are being made with the Ministry of Transport to establish new sea and air connectivity links. He also highlighted that significant progress is being made under the China-Maldives Free Trade Agreement, and that the government is preparing to advance all related initiatives under a comprehensive, long-term trade development plan.
