June 30th marks the International Day of Parliamentarism, as designated by the United Nations. This day serves to recognize parliaments as the foremost institutions representing the will and power of the people within a democracy. The primary responsibilities of a parliament include enacting legislation that upholds citizens’ rights and promotes societal welfare, holding the government accountable, and ensuring national stability. As parliamentarians are the servants of the people, their efforts must prioritize the public interest over personal gain, thereby fostering and maintaining trust in democratic institutions. In the Maldives, the People’s Majlis plays a pivotal role in driving national progress and safeguarding the rights of all citizens.
