President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has formally invited the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom to initiate official discussions regarding the Chagos Archipelago, expressing concerns over the decision to transfer sovereignty of the islands to Mauritius. In his letter, the President highlighted the historical and geographical ties between the Maldives and the Chagos Islands, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to collaborating with the UK government to safeguard the rights and interests of the Maldivian state and its citizens. The Maldivian government views the UK’s decision to delay the transfer of the archipelago—which is situated significantly closer to the Maldives than to Mauritius—as a vital opportunity for further negotiation.
