The government has submitted a bill to the People’s Majlis seeking to reduce the import duty on cigarettes, bidis, and heated tobacco products from 8 Rufiyaa to 4 Rufiyaa per unit. The amendment, introduced by the Member of Parliament for Komandoo constituency, Mohamed Ibrahim, also includes provisions to exempt duties on nicotine replacement therapies, such as nicotine gum and patches, intended to assist individuals in smoking cessation. While this adjustment is projected to result in an estimated revenue loss of approximately 21 million Rufiyaa for the state, the changes will come into effect immediately upon ratification of the bill by the President.
