President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has ratified significant amendments to the Fisheries Act of the Maldives, aimed at advancing the nation’s fishing industry and safeguarding the rights of fishers. These legislative changes open new economic avenues, specifically establishing the legal framework necessary for the expansion of sports fishing and the development and management of specialized harbors for this purpose. Furthermore, to enhance marine conservation, the enforcement mechanism has been strengthened by introducing substantial fines for illegal activities, such as the harvesting or exporting of protected marine species. Government officials and industry experts view these reforms as a historic milestone that will modernize the fisheries sector, stimulate investment, and ensure sustainable benefits for the fishing community.
