Despite initial criticism from members of the ruling People’s National Congress (PNC) regarding the amendment proposed by the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), Majority Leader Ibrahim Falah has confirmed that the bill will be accepted and passed after incorporating further refinements. Falah stated that safeguarding the rights of resort employees is a priority for the President, and during the committee stage, extensive consultations will be held with both resort owners and employees to ensure the legislation is mutually beneficial for all stakeholders.
While Falah had previously characterized the opposition’s proposal as a move for political gain and emphasized the importance of protecting investor interests, he reiterated the government’s commitment to employee welfare. The bill, introduced by MP Mauroof Zakir, primarily mandates that service charges be distributed in the same currency in which they are collected and seeks to extend service charge benefits to contract employees.
