The Elections Commission (EC) has issued an advisory to the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) and the People’s National Front (PNF) regarding their recent anti-government activities in Malé. The Commission noted that some of these activities have involved rhetoric that violates social norms and conduct that could incite public disorder.

The Commission has urged the parties to refrain from making unsubstantiated allegations, infringing upon the private lives of individuals, and organizing unauthorized gatherings in streets and public squares. This guidance follows concerns raised by members of the People’s National Congress (PNC) in Parliament regarding whether opposition activities are adhering to the established legal boundaries.

Members of the government coalition have asserted that the current national situation does not involve any form of oppression or actions detrimental to the country that would justify such protests. While providing this counsel, the EC reaffirmed its commitment to supporting political activities, provided they are conducted within the framework of the law.
