The major project to relocate the Malé Commercial Port to Thilafushi has been officially awarded to China Harbour Engineering Company (CHEC). Under the scope of this agreement, the infrastructure at Thilafushi will be enhanced with a 375-meter quay wall specifically designed for international cargo vessels, alongside an 820-meter quay wall dedicated to domestic maritime traffic.
The primary objective of this initiative is to alleviate the current congestion at the Malé port and streamline the cargo unloading and clearance processes. With a strategic target for completion by November next year, the new port facilities are engineered to accommodate national requirements for the next 30 years.
Upon completion, this transition is expected to significantly improve operational efficiency, reducing cargo clearance times from the current five days to just two. Furthermore, the relocation will facilitate the repurposing of the current Malé port area for alternative urban development needs.
