According to statistics released by MACL, Velana International Airport handled 18,457 tonnes of cargo during the second quarter of this year, representing a 2% increase compared to the first quarter. This total includes 13,542 tonnes of imports and 4,915 tonnes of exports. Notably, transshipment cargo rose by 26%, reaching 3,650 tonnes. Furthermore, freighter movements grew by 12%, totaling 94 operations during this period. The government aims to expand the cargo terminal’s capacity to 300,000 tonnes to meet future demand. Additionally, MPL and MACL continue to successfully provide sea-to-air transshipment services in collaboration with 11 airlines.
