The introduction of wide-body aircraft to the national carrier, Maldivian, marks the fulfillment of a key presidential pledge by His Excellency President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu to establish direct flight connectivity with distant international destinations. Since the commencement of wide-body operations in January last year, the airline initially focused its scheduled services on various Chinese destinations. In addition to operating charter flights to Bangkok, Malaysia, and Saudi Arabia, Maldivian reached a significant milestone on the 19th of this month by launching direct 11-hour flights to Melbourne, Australia.

The management of Maldivian emphasizes that such enhanced connectivity is a pivotal step toward bolstering the Maldivian economy and diversifying the tourism sector. Specifically, establishing direct routes to Australia—a market that already contributes 40,000 tourists annually—is projected to increase arrivals from that region by 20%. Looking ahead, Maldivian is preparing to further expand its global footprint by acquiring additional wide-body aircraft and launching services to more international destinations.
