Recent statistics reveal that 37 tons of goods were exported from the Maldives last month through the Sea-to-Air cargo service. This service model involves the transshipment of goods arriving by sea, which are then forwarded to various international destinations via air freight. Although the service was officially launched on May 15, 2024, data released by Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) indicates that during the month of April, a total of 37 tons of cargo—equivalent to 8 TEUs—were dispatched to five countries across the globe using four different airlines.
Airlines that facilitated Sea-to-Air cargo transport last month:
- Emirates
- Etihad Airways
- Lufthansa
- Qatar Airways
Currently, more than 17 airlines have partnered with the Sea-to-Air cargo service, which is managed through a collaborative effort between Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) and MPL. The Sea-to-Air cargo model is a well-established global practice that contributes significantly to the economic growth of many nations. Furthermore, the government has highlighted that since the Maldives is a hub for numerous international airlines, there are vast opportunities to further expand and develop this service within the country.
