The President of the Judicial Service Commission (JSC), Hisnee Mubarak, has stated that the government has decided to re-establish the “Judicial Council” to strengthen the administrative governance of the judiciary and ensure its independence from political influence. Following the previous administration’s decision to bring the Department of Judicial Administration (DJA) under the JSC—which resulted in numerous administrative challenges—President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has announced legislative amendments to place the DJA back under the mandate of a newly formed Judicial Council. Hisnee highlighted that these changes will be implemented in consultation with judges and the courts, further guaranteeing the independence of the judiciary. The Judicial Council, which includes judges from various court tiers, was originally established under the Judicature Act of 2010.
