President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has announced legislative reforms to empower citizens to remove Members of Parliament and local councilors through petitions in cases of underperformance or legal violations. Furthermore, the government is working towards synchronizing presidential and parliamentary elections to be held on the same day, restoring the presidential inauguration date to November 11, and introducing a “preferential voting” system to enable the election of a president in a single round.

As part of the government’s comprehensive reform package, plans are underway to introduce legal amendments to reserve specific parliamentary seats for women and youth, and to further ensure the independence of oversight institutions and the judiciary. Key initiatives include restructuring the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) and enhancing judicial standards. The President emphasized that the implementation of these significant constitutional and legal changes will be guided by the outcomes of public referendums.
