A significant portion of the Giraavarufalhu reclamation project has now been completed. Out of the total 167.15 hectares planned for reclamation under this project, 105 hectares have been finished so far. Under the ongoing work contracted to MACL, 35 hectares out of the remaining 97.15 hectares have already been reclaimed above sea level. The government aims to conclude the entire reclamation process within the next three weeks.
President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu visited Giraavarufalhu today to inspect the progress of the site. Minister of Housing, Land and Urban Development, Dr. Ali Haidar Ahmed, stated that once reclamation is finished and surveying is completed, the process of handing over land plots will begin as soon as possible. Accordingly, the allocation of land is scheduled to commence in June. The Minister further noted that the process of issuing land registries will begin even before the reclamation is fully finalized.
To expedite the project, two of the world’s largest dredgers, “Queen of the Netherlands” and “Orange,” are being utilized. MACL highlighted that since Giraavarufalhu is a relatively deep area, a substantial volume of sand is required for the reclamation. A total of 4,072 land plots are designated for allocation from this area, ranging in size from 1,250 square feet to 2,450 square feet.
