In a social media post shared in conjunction with World Tuberculosis Day, First Lady Sajida Mohamed stated that every individual diagnosed with tuberculosis is someone whose life and family are profoundly affected by the condition. While TB is both preventable and curable, she highlighted that misconceptions and a lack of public awareness continue to pose significant barriers for many in seeking timely treatment. She emphasized that eliminating the disease requires more than medical intervention alone — it calls for the active spread of accurate information and the cultivation of a compassionate, supportive community that stands by those affected. The Maldives is currently working in partnership with the World Health Organization toward the goal of controlling TB and classifying it as a disease that no longer poses a public health threat by the year 2030.
