The Maldives Police Service is a long-standing institution with a 93-year history, established on March 29, 1933, under the country’s first constitution. Initially launched in Malé with just 120 personnel, the service functioned as a branch of the military for several decades. It was formally separated from the military and established as a civil service institution in 2004. While the expansion of police services to the atolls began in 1993 from S. Gan, today, a police presence has been successfully established in every inhabited island across the Maldives.

The core responsibilities of the police include maintaining public order, protecting lives and property, investigating criminal offenses, and upholding the rule of law. To fulfill these duties, the institution has integrated modern resources, established specialized centers, and introduced community-centric initiatives such as ‘Neighborhood Policing.’ The primary objective of the Maldives Police Service remains to uphold public trust while ensuring a safe and secure environment for every individual.
