The Minister of Islamic Affairs, Dr. Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed, has stated that expanding the role of Waqf (Islamic Endowments) within the Islamic civilization of the Maldives is a key objective of the government. In line with the vision of President Dr. Muizzu, efforts are currently underway to strengthen the Waqf system by drafting specialized legislation and developing a robust management framework.
In this regard, in addition to the construction of new buildings such as ‘Darul Arqam’ in Malé, Waqf projects have been officially awarded for implementation in Addu City, Thinadhoo City, Kulhudhuffushi City, and Villimale’. The primary goal of these initiatives is to establish a sustainable financial model that reduces reliance on the state budget, ensuring that the revenue generated from Waqf properties is utilized for the maintenance of mosques and the promotion of religious activities.
