Following the dissolution of the Ministry of Cities, Local Government, and Public Works, His Excellency the President has designated the Minister of Finance, Moosa Zameer, as the Cabinet Minister accountable to Parliament for all matters pertaining to local councils under the decentralization framework. With this administrative change, the mandate for formulating and implementing policies related to the decentralization system has been officially transferred to the Ministry of Finance. Furthermore, the Minister of Finance now serves as the Chairperson of the Local Government Authority (LGA), the primary body responsible for coordinating council activities. Consequently, all functions previously undertaken by the Ministry of Cities will now proceed under the oversight of the Ministry of Finance. The LGA has assured that this transition will not result in any legal or administrative vacuum in the functioning of the decentralization system.
