In the lead-up to the MDP Chairperson election, a significant dispute has emerged between former President Mohamed Nasheed and Member of Parliament Meekail Ahmed Naseem. The conflict was sparked by President Nasheed’s remarks following his return to the party after his previous departure. While addressing the general membership, Nasheed stated that just as he apologized to the members, they too must seek his forgiveness.
Responding to these remarks, Meekail asserted that the general members of MDP owe no apology to anyone. He emphasized that all positions and honors held by political figures are the direct result of the sacrifices made by the party’s grassroots members. Furthermore, Meekail accused Nasheed of abandoning the party during the 2023 elections for personal political gain, leaving the general membership stranded. It is notable that in this election, former President Solih is backing Meekail.
