The Health Protection Agency (HPA) has issued a public advisory to remain cautious following the identification of measles cases in the Maldives. As a highly contagious respiratory disease, measles spreads rapidly. Primary symptoms include fever, a persistent cough, runny nose, red eyes, and a characteristic red rash that typically originates on the face before spreading across the rest of the body.
The most effective preventive measure against this disease is ensuring the completion of both doses of the measles vaccine. Children under the age of five are at a significantly higher risk of severe complications. If symptoms are observed, it is crucial to wear a face mask and seek medical consultation without delay. To assist the public, Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) has established a dedicated service desk, available daily from 8:00 AM to 11:00 PM. With the disease also spreading in several neighboring countries, adhering to public health safety measures is of utmost importance.
