The relocation of the Malé Commercial Port to Thilafushi is a strategic government initiative aimed at bolstering the Maldives’ maritime industry and addressing the persistent spatial and temporal constraints faced in clearing imported goods. To mitigate the current capacity challenges at the Malé port, interim measures have been implemented, including the transition to 24-hour service operations and the transfer of empty containers to Thilafushi.
As import demand has surged, with the volume of goods doubling between 2020 and 2025, a sustainable solution is contingent upon the development of the new international port at Thilafushi. Scheduled for completion by November next year, this state-of-the-art facility will span a land area ten times larger than the existing port and feature a quay wall three times its current length. This transition is expected to drastically reduce cargo clearance times from seven days to just two, marking a significant modernization of the nation’s logistical infrastructure.
