A total of MVR 21.2 million was collected as Zakat al-Maal (Wealth Zakat) this past June, marking a twofold increase compared to the corresponding period last year. Total collections for the current year have now reached MVR 79.6 million, representing a 29 percent growth over the previous year’s figures.
In the Maldives, the current Nisab (the minimum threshold of wealth upon which Zakat becomes obligatory) is set at MVR 21,836.50. While Zakat payments can be processed online through the Maldives Inland Revenue Authority (MIRA), the Nisab is periodically adjusted in accordance with fluctuations in gold and silver prices on the global market.
