Mohamed Shakeel, a nominee for the Elections Commission (EC), informed the Parliament’s Committee on Independent Institutions that his prior resignation from the commission during former President Yameen’s administration was due to the absence of an environment conducive to working independently. He asserted that he would not remain in office if he were unable to fulfill his constitutional mandates autonomously, stating that he would resign again should such circumstances arise in the future. Shakeel, who currently serves as the Managing Director of the Maldives Hajj Corporation, is the candidate nominated by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu for the position at the Elections Commission.
