With the inauguration of 6.4-megawatt solar hybrid systems across 25 islands in Baa and Raa Atoll, the Maldives’ total renewable energy production capacity has increased to 116 megawatts. Minister of Climate Change, Environment and Energy, Ali Shareef, stated that this project—conducted with the assistance of the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and the European Investment Bank (EIB)—is expected to save approximately 68 million Rufiyaa annually on fuel expenditures. The government aims to reduce the country’s dependency on fuel imports, which currently accounts for 13 percent of the GDP, and transition to 33 percent renewable energy for electricity consumption by the end of 2028. Significant progress has been achieved in this sector over the past two years, more than doubling the previous production capacity of 53 megawatts.
