Ibrahim Ismail (Ibra), the former President of the Special Majlis, has stated that the constitutional amendments proposed by former President Mohamed Nasheed and Fayyaz Ismail are not ideal. He noted that many existing issues could be addressed by providing more comprehensive interpretations and clarifications of the current constitutional provisions.
Nasheed and Fayyaz have proposed the introduction of a “hybrid system” that would separate the roles of the Head of State and the Head of Government. However, Ibra emphasized that the current Constitution is a robust document, meticulously drafted with the assistance of international experts.
In his view, rather than implementing fundamental structural changes, the focus should be on clarifying ambiguous articles and seeking definitive judicial interpretations from the Supreme Court. The proposals put forward by Nasheed and his associates include measures such as seeking a popular vote for the selection of the Head of State and the removal of judges.
