The Indian High Commissioner to the Maldives, Munu Mahawar (G. Balasubramanyam), has stated that the core focus of the bilateral relationship between India and the Maldives is centered on infrastructure development and human resource enhancement. As the two nations approach the 60th anniversary of their diplomatic ties, significant initiatives are underway, including the donation of sports equipment to various islands and the training of over 1,600 Maldivians annually under the ITEC program.
In terms of infrastructure, the High Commissioner highlighted major projects such as the Thilamalé Bridge and the redevelopment of Hanimaadhoo and Gan international airports. Furthermore, 56 projects have been initiated under the “High Impact Community Development” scheme aimed at social progress, 24 of which have already been completed. These initiatives symbolize the enduring partnership between the two countries, focused specifically on the well-being and progress of the Maldivian people.
