Minister of Economic Development and Trade, Mohamed Saeed, has announced that the physical implementation of the project to relocate the Malé Commercial Port to Thilafushi will commence this month. The Minister highlighted that despite the continuous growth in the Maldives’ population and tourism sector—which has led to a significant surge in import demand—no permanent solution has been implemented to address port constraints over the last 40 years.

The government aims to establish a modern, state-of-the-art port facility in Thilafushi, with a strategic goal to complete the project by November 2027. While a designated area for empty container storage has already been developed and is currently operational at Thilafushi, this comprehensive project represents a pivotal initiative in bolstering and modernizing the nation’s maritime infrastructure.
